Project OVERVIEW

The Traffic Integration Messaging System, or TIMS, is a web app for creating intelligence training exercises, designed to replicate real-world messaging systems so that soldiers can learn to discern real coded military messages from white noise. πŸ“Ί The application allows for the creation and running of exercises.Β

Β

Our product team had to first run extensive research on the legacy product, defining key performance indicators, and running user tests to map user journeys and logic flow, and find opportunities for product improvements.

Β

The designers and system architects essentially had to rebuild from the ground up. πŸ› οΈ

The map view of TIMS has extensive functionalities such as message pinning and defining exercise location parameters.

Challenges & Opportunities

β™Ώ Usability

β™Ώ Usability

The original TIMS was clearly not designed for usability. It had limited processing capabilities, no data tracking and a high learning curve.

πŸ”’ Security

πŸ”’ Security

The application needed to be accessible from both classified and unclassified networks.

πŸ“ˆ Data Import & Display

πŸ“ˆ Data Import & Display

The system must be able to import data/messages to be usable in the new TIMS and display them in multiple ways across a map, timeline, and calendar view.

research & planning

Whiteboarding processes and potential data display.
Mapping user flow throughout the app.

Wireframes

Initial wireframes done in Adobe XD of the Map View, messages table, calendar view, and timeline view.

FINAL MOCKUPS

Map view showing a selected message pin.
Exercises displayed in the table view.
Multiple message edit state.
"Bending" messages modal to apply different data attributes.
Timeline view.
Calendar view.
Import Messages modal showing the option to transfer data fields.

Outcome

Our product redesign significantly streamlined the process, reducing the time needed to develop training exercises from several weeks to just a few hours. This improvement allowed teams to create, test, and deploy training modules more efficiently, accelerating training timelines and improving overall KPIs.

Β

The redesign improved exercise creation speed by over 95%. πŸƒπŸ’¨

Β

After a thorough stress test, the product was launched and in full use in the fall of 2020.
